Surf Breaks In the Area:
#7 Playa Grande: Beach break with a perfect left and right. The peaks at Grande hold waves up to almost double-overhead in a good swell. It is very consistent and almost always has fun waves with good shapes. Grande usually catches more swell than Tamarindo. #8 Tamarindo: Tamarindo Bay (the beach closest to Hotel Chocolate) has become a surfing Mecca. The town of Tamarindo has two fun, consistent breaks: El Estero and Pico Pequeño. El Estero is an excellent river mouth break where the Tamarindo Estuary empties into the Pacific Ocean. Pico Pequeño is a lava finger reef that can get good to perfect in the right swell. Mid-tide is the best time for both breaks, but go anytime except dead low tide. #9 Langosta: Rights and lefts breaking over rocks and sand in front of the river mouth. It is usually a little bigger than the nearby breaks in Tamarindo. Very fun surfing, but not always perfect waves. Playa Avellanas: There are about 5 different reef/sand breaks with semi-hollow lefts and rights, located on a 2 mile stretch of beautiful beach. Surfing is best at mid to high tide; avoid low tide. The bar on the beach at Avellanas is worth the 10km trip alone! |
